This week has been pretty tiring as we have been in crunch for tonight's opening of 42nd Street at GSM. I decided that I needed to take a break from my marathon training because of the late nights, but I'll be back on that horse either Sunday or Monday morning.
The oldest three calvinatorettes started Children's Theatre camp at Terrell Actors Playhouse this week as well. They seem to be enjoying it so far. Their camp performance will be in two weeks.

Back Again
It has been a crazy spring moving into summer. As you can see from the posts below, I started running in January in an effort to get in shape and start the preparation for the White Rock Marathon.
As I'm sure anyone who is reading this knows, I appeared on Jeopardy! in June. The shows taped back in February, so that interrupted my training. I started back on the road in March and managed to run my first 5K in May. I even came in under my goal of 40 minutes.
I also was cast in a semi-professional production of 42nd Street at Garland Summer Musicals. I'll be playing Bert Barry, and we open this Friday. If you call the box office for tickets (972-205-2790), if you use my name, you get a four dollar discount per ticket.

Long, Strange Trip
I can't explain why I haven't updated here since April. Let's blame it on Facebook.
Life has been through many twists and turns over the past 9 months.
To keep it short:
Work is still work.
I won an acting award for my performance in Suessical: the Musical as Best Actor in a Featured Role at the Awards Gala for Kaufman County Civic Theatre.
I decided to run for District Attorney in my county, and then at the last minute I had to drop out because of a work-related issue.
As a result of my candidacy, I missed an opportunity to appear on "Jeopardy!" I can only hope that now that I'm no longer a candidate, they will give me another shot. This is only the latest installment in this saga. You can read a brief account of my Jeopardy! Tale of Woe.
I've gained a little weight, but not so much that it's depressing.
I don't do New Year's Resolutions, but I have decided to get in shape and prepare to Run the Rock in December 2010.

Another Review of Damn Yankees
Elaine Liner gives a mixed review in The Dallas Observer. The only mention of my performance gets this line, "The men's voices blend nicely on the miles and miles and miles of 'Heart.'"

The first review is online only. The best parts as far as I'm concerned were:
I'm not entirely sure that "chew[ing] up the scenery" is a good thing, but the reviewer seems to have meant it in a positive way.
A second review came out today on the Dallas Edge website. (A guess a warning should be given that the site is a GLBT site).
The singing in this version of Damn Yankees exceeds the film and original cast recording. The emphasis on this production was the vocal performances versus the dancing. The tunes are classic staples of musical theatre and have become ingrained in the popular culture. To hear them sung so well is a delight: a big treat!

Damn Yankees opens in a week
Garland Summer Musicals production of Damn Yankees opens Friday June 20th. I play the Catcher for the Washington Senators baseball team, Smokey. I am featured in two songs, "Heart" and "The Game," and I also dance in "Shoeless Joe" and "Two Lost Souls." Our wonderful cast includes Joshua Doss as Joe Hardy, Morgana Shaw as Lola, and John Garcia as Applegate. The rest of the cast is tremendous, too.
The show should be a blast, so please come check it out.

Quick Update
I've been busy lately. I bought a bicycle about a month and a half ago. Then, I joined a local gym a few weeks after that. In all, since I bought the bike, I have lost 11 pounds, and my waist has started to shrink already.
I finished The Philadelphia Story at KCCT in April, and yesterday, I had my first rehearsal with Garland Summer Musicals for Damn Yankees. It should be fun, but tiring.
A little sickness is going around the family. First, it was Hannah, then Erin. Tonight, my stomach started feeling not quite right. I hope I can avoid the unpleasantness the girls have had to go through.

Come to the Beach
I Directed Brighton Beach Memoirs for Kaufman County Civic Theatre. We opened Friday, have a matinee tomorrow at 2pm, and run for two more weekends. You can leave a comment here and let me know you're coming (I'm also running the light board—It is community theatre after all), or you can call the theatre at 972-563-8991 and leave a voicemail for reservations.
Tickets are $12 ($10 for Senior Citizens).

Here I Am Again, Fellas
Up way too late when I have to be in Court in the morning (I can't think of those words without thinking of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park. Speaking of Neil Simon, I'm directing Brighton Beach Memoirs at KCCT. Rehearsals don't start until August 27th. Thankfully, I have been able to cast the entire show. Now, I want to make sure we promote the heck out of it because its a great show that I think people will enjoy, and it would be a shame if we only average audiences of 20.

Run Away
I went this morning and got my tickets to see Monty Python's SPAMalot at Dallas Summer Musicals.
Local radio station 98.7 KLUV was onsite at the DSm Box Office with show-related games to play. I pinned the limb on the Black Knight and won an Official SPAMalot cap.
My wife and I will be going to see the show. It will be the first time she has gone with me to see a professional production.

Marathon Reading Sessions
Word came out this week that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released at Midnight on July 21, 2007. Melissa, John & Sue from PotterCast issued this week's Blog Challenge in Episode #75, which was released Sunday. This week's challenge is for listeners to predict how long it will take them to read Deathly Hallows in its entirety.
I believe it is reasonable to assume that Deathly Hallows will be somewhere in the neighborhood of the length of books 4, 5, & 6. So, extrapolating from my experience with those books, I should be able to come up with a fairly accurate guess as to how long it will take me to read the ultimate entry in the Harry Potter series. When I bought Half-Blood Prince right at Midnight when it came out, I took it straight home and read for about an hour before going to sleep. When I woke up Saturday morning, I embarked on an all-day reading session, taking breaks only to eat, help take care of my four daughters, and take care of other necessary functions. I read past midnight, finally finishing at around 1:30 a.m. Clock time from purchase to completion was 25 1/2 hours, but actual reading time was less than twelve.
This time around, my daughters are all older, so I shouldn't have to take as many breaks to help with them. Meals don't have to take a long time, and reading can actually be accomplished during some of the other "necessary business," so there's no reason to believe that I couldn't finish the final book in about nine or ten hours if I could go uninterrupted. HOWEVER, there's a chance I might be in production for a musical with Garland Summer Musicals at the release date. In fact, I may be performing in Opening Night of Thoroughly Modern Millie on the evening of July 20th. If that's the case, I'll be more tired on the 21st, and I'll have to be back at the theatre by 7:00 p.m. for the 8 o'clock curtain. That would mean if I wasn't finished by about 6 p.m., I would have to put the book down for the night's performance. I've never been the type who can read something unrelated to the current show in the middle of a performance.
Also complicating matters is that if I am in that show, I won't be able to pick up my copy as early as I might have otherwise.
So, what does this all mean? I'm not sure, but if forced to guess, I'd say that I will probably get Deathly Hallows finished before I have to leave the house for the theatre. Hey, the forced deadline might even make me read faster.
My prediction is that I will have the book finished no later than 6:00 p.m. on July 21, 2007. Total reading time will be no more than ten hours. It would be fun to be at the performance that night and torture any fellow HP fans by telling them I have already finished and teasing them that I might spoil the ending for them. I'd never actually do that, but it would be funny to see how many people go screaming out of the green room with their fingers in their ears.

Insomnia
While I'm waiting to get sleepy, let me make a few recommendations:
Book: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I finished it a couple of days ago. It sort of gets weaker toward the end, but after years of reading fiction, I have come to the conclusion that ending a book might be one of the hardest things out there.
Film: Thank You for Smoking. Rented this one from Blockbuster and thoroughly enjoyed it.
TV: "Heroes". I have really liked the first three episodes of this show. I'll have to catch episode four on NBC's website tomorrow. I had a meeting tonight and forgot to set the VCR.
Music: Altar Boyz Off-Broadway Soundtrack. I purchased this one from iTunes. I appreciate the humor, and quite honestly, some of the lyrics are great.

Nature Abhors a Vacuum
It seems that I always tend to find ways to fill up my "free time." Last night, I did not have rehearsal, but I had a meeting to go to. Tonight, I don't have rehearsal until 9pm, but I have a meeting before that.
Things should lighten up once Kiss Me, Kate closes, but I know that there will still be lots to claim my time and attention. I'm not the kind of person who always needs to be doing "something," but I'm also not the kind who can sit at home every night.

The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow
I trekked down to the local community theatre to audition for Annie tonight. My up tempo song went okay but my ballad was dreck. I really wanted to sing "Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors, but despite the fact that I just did the show, I didn't get a copy of the score to keep. So, I had to go back to a song that I'm less familiar with and that is slightly out of my range. It's too high where written, and a little too low if I drop it an octave.
Anyway, I thought the cold reading went okay, and given the paucity of men that were signed up, I'm pretty sure I'll be something in the show. Probably not what I want, though.

Despite my failings as an auditioner, it was great to see Babs tonight. I'm sorry she ran into all that crap up in Denton, but if it means I get to do a show with her again, I'll be happy.
This will also likely be my eldest daughter's first show. She participated in our Children's Theatre program last summer, but this will be her first full production, assuming she gets cast. She'll turn 6 on the date of one of the performances.

I am Thankful
KThis is the time at which we naturally start to think about all for which we have to be thankful. For me, the list is very long.
I am thankful for a wife who loves me no matter how difficult I may be at times.
I am thankful for four beautiful and healthy daughters who love me.
I am thankful for a brother who was a good example to me when I was growing up and who still challenges me to think.
I am thankful for a sister with a loving spirit who can make me laugh when she laughs with abandon.
I am thankful for a father-in-law and mother-in-law who raised a wonderful wife for me.
I am thankful for a job that I enjoy that feels worthwhile.
I am thankful for a part-time second job that I enjoy that helps pay our monthly bills.
I am thankful for living in the United States where I can enjoy the freedom to believe what I want, think what I want, and say what I want.
I am thankful for a home, despite all the chores it requires.
I am thankful for the ability to spend my free time in activities that stimulate me and foster my creativity.
I am thankful for a mother who taught me what it means to be a Godly woman, and who showed me a model for a wife.

Cream colored window treatments
Sometimes I feel like a walking contradiction.
I'm Conservative, Republican, Heterosexual, Manly even.
I like the Dallas Cowboys.
I love NASCAR.
Yet, at the same time, I think there's no denying that my absolutely favorite style of music is Broadway Show Tunes.
Just today, I've listened to the Soundtracks for Songs For a New World, Nunsense, and Wicked.
In my car, I have others: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Urinetown, Little Shop of Horrors (2003 Broadway version), Little Shop of Horrors (1982 Off-Broadway version), Anything Goes, Cabaret (1998 Broadway Revival), and A Year With Frog and Toad.
I bought most of these at Borders Bookstore.
