The iMac is Back

After going with the family to story time at Borders, we headed over to the Apple Store to pick up my iMac. Hurrah!

Computer Woes

The logic board on our iMac has gone bad. Again. We had it replaced last November, but the new one has gone bad, too. It isn't under warranty.

Even with the cost of the repair, it is cheaper to repair than to replace.

Reason #7143 why I love Apple

I got my iMac back after only 2 days. It's better than new.

I am oh, so very happy.

Computer Woes

First, the bad news. My iMac G5 died a few days ago. I took it to the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store today. It didn't take long for the guy to come back with the even worse news. The logic board and the power supply had both gone bad.

More bad news. I didn't purchase the extended Apple Care Plan when I bought the computer in 2005, so the warranty expired over a year ago.

But then, there's good news.

It turns out that the logic board/power supply problem was a known issue with my model, so even though I'm not under Warranty, Apple is still going to replace the parts at no charge. Otherwise, it would have cost me about $800.

Computer Issues

We had lost internet access at home a few days ago. We were sure it was a problem with our ISP, but it turns out our Ethernet port was dead. Unlike some computers, the iMac does not have a swapable ethernet card. To replace it would require replacing the entire logic board. Instead, I decided to get an Apple Airport Express base. Once I opened it up and plugged it in, we had internet access in about 30 seconds. Also, if we ever invest in newer computers for the calvinatorettes or Macbooks for me or Mrs. Calvinator, we can access the internet on all of them through the wireless hub.

A Man and His Toys

I just got back from Wal*Mart where I purchased a cordless optical mouse. It's amazing what you don't realize you need until you get it. The tracking is far superior to the old ball mouse we had been using. The optical mouse that came with my iMac died over a year ago. Actually, it seems that the cable from the mouse to the computer got pulled loose a little. My wife taped it up with clear packing tape, and my daughters use it on their iMac with no problems.

Now, we just have to keep the girls from running off with our cordless one and hiding it where we can't find it.

Prowling like a Panther

I upgraded the Operating System on my 4 year old iMac last night. We went from OS 9.2.2 to 10.3.6. (OS X Panther)

Two words:

Suh Weet!!!!!

We probably will need to add some RAM. We have 256M, and it will run with that, but Rod told me that it will run much better with more.

I guess I should thank Microsoft. Internet Explorer for MAC has become increasingly buggy dealing with Java Script and Shockwave flash, both of which have become ubiquitous on the web. Problems with Internet Explorer were what finally motivated me to make the upgrade.

And to you Windows XP users who finally got an OS that approached the MAC, well, let me just say, you don't have squat.
